How Does Dual Work?

Incoming kindergarten students must apply and are selected for the program using a lottery system (see Commonly Asked Questions & Answers for more information on how the lottery runs).  These students will remain in the dual language classes for the length of the program, currently grades K-12.

In grades K-4, students have a language allotted Spanish Language Arts and an English Language Arts literacy block for half of the day. Their math, social studies and science blocks are taught in English the other half of the day. At this time in grade 5, students receive their language allotted literacy instruction blocks in English and their math, social studies and science blocks in Spanish. In 2024-25  the SLA/ELA language allocation will roll up to 5th grade. In the dual language classes English and Spanish speaking students are partnered 50/50 so that they can provide each other with support.

At East Valley Central, the 6th grade dual students receive two blocks of Spanish math along with one block of Spanish science instruction. In seventh and eighth grade dual students receive math and social studies instruction in Spanish with Spanish Language Arts offered as an elective. Dual time accounts for up to 3 of their 7 periods each day. The remainders of their studies are conducted in English.

At East Valley High School, the dual language course offerings continue to grow with the program. Student have the opportunity to continue dual services through a variety of classes such as Spanish Biology, Spanish Math, and Spanish Language.
